Robert Allen Zimmerman has just released his 35th studio album at the age of 71. Raspy and folky with a hint of the blues, he’s still a master story teller, with a great band providing a cruisy template for his stories. They’ve got the brushes on the drums, the steel guitar and the occasional banjo - there’s a flavour of the old country as you’d expect from Bob. As I listened I wondered why his voice was sounding so hoarse. When I opened the liner notes I saw why: a photo with him surrounded by the band, smoking a cigar. That and a life time of being a rock ‘n roll legend. Once you get past that, this is a great album.
Highlights include the opener and the title track; a 14 minute epic consisting of 45 verses and no choruses, all about the Titanic and what it must’ve been like to be on board. The album concludes with an ode to the late John Lennon in Roll On John. Fans will not be disappointed.
