Album Review - Cliff Richard: 50th Anniversary Album

EMI

Harry Webb has had hit songs in every decade since he began performing as Cliff Richard in the late 1950s, a rare feat. From 1958’s Move It, considered Britain’s first rock ‘n roll song, to Thank You For A Lifetime (released the year of this album’s initial release: 2008) this two CD set is a comprehensive guide to the first 50 years of Sir Cliff. The music includes the crooning of Constantly and the toe tapping Lucky Lips, then the sombre to joyous (and back again) storytelling of The Day I Met Marie, and so many great songs in between. His voice has stayed eerily similar over all these years, much like his looks I suppose. From smooth to raw it is always unmistakably Cliff. The accompanying CD inlay includes a biography of the early days by Richard Williams, who was clearly affected by this music from day one. It is a testament to his talent that he can crossover into so many genres, and have so many hits. There are songs on here I haven’t heard in ages, like My Pretty One. Whether he’s your guilty pleasure or you openly love Cliff Richard, there’ll be more than one song on here for you. A must for fans, and keep it handy for Christmas! (See disc two).
