Album Review - Fleetwood Mac: 25 Years The Chain

On Monday Night (October 22) Prime TV is screening Fleetwood Mac: Behind The Music. The tale of the incestuous genius of the five members is uncomfortable watching, the emotional turmoil they went through in their various internal relationships is laid bare, as is the candidness of their physical abuse through drugs – you can understand why Mick Fleetwood later proclaimed at an awards ceremony “We’re all still here! And we’re healthy, and still playing!” It really is astounding. In 1992 a four disc best of was released to celebrate 25 years of Fleetwood Mac music.  With the announcement of them going on a world tour again a few weeks ago, the collection has been re-released globally, getting to number 9 on the UK charts recently.

All the hits are on here, and more. The set features several previously unreleased studio tracks, new (at the time) remixes, live recordings, and a different version of Tusk – this one has a brass section and more background noise – it sounds like it was recorded at a party! Inside with the CDs is a 65 page booklet with photos of the band from 1967 right up to the 1987 line up. It’s like looking through their family album, especially the candid pics from the 1970s.

The other night as I was driving and listening to the first disc. I hadn’t looked at the track listing and had no idea what was coming up. I got to about track five and I started thinking about a song of theirs that I used to like, that I hadn’t heard for a long time. Two seconds later it started playing. I couldn’t believe it! I cranked up the volume and relived a teenage summer in Whangamata. Then Everywhere came on and I started singing along. Loudly. Badly. What a great drive that was.

I like Fleetwood Mac. It surprises me that I don’t have more of their albums when I think about it. Unless you’re a passionate fan, this collection is really all you need – as you’ll see below.
