What set the Beach Boys apart from your average pop band in the 1960s was their vocal harmonies. Only they could send that tingle down your spine with I Get Around, Good Vibrations and even later in their career with Kokomo. In a good set of headphones these songs sound fantastic, because you can hear each voice in the combination, and they all sound great. Having celebrated 50 years of music together recently, they wrote and released a new album and hit the globe. The nearest gigs to us were in Australia, where I’m told (by one of our winners) that they played for four hours. Four Hours! That’s amazing, at most concerts you’re lucky to get three. So how come they could go on for so long? Because they had so many songs the crowd wanted to hear. Hits. This collection has a mere 20 of them, including the new tune That’s Why God Made The Radio. There are photos of the five unlikely lads in the CD inlay, including a then and now comparison. Sunglasses aside it’s hard to recognise them as being the same people! For the Beach Boys though, it was always about the music, and the surfing. These songs make me want to pick up a board and learn!
