Remember Moondance? Fondly? Then you’ll love Van the man’s new album. You’ll get a healthy dose of jazz, slow blues and Mr Morrison’s familiar tones, so grab a glass of wine or have some friends round for dinner, this CD will be an ideal accompaniment.
Track five somes up the general mood of many of these new songs, it’s called Close Enough For Jazz. You can tell he’s not strictly in the genre, but he’s having fun skirting around the edges of it, occasionally dipping his toes in, so to speak. He’s a good sax player too, offset by band member Chris White. Two saxophones? You bet, and it doesn’t sound cluttered. I read that Van enjoyed the freedom he had in making this album. There was no pressure on what it needed to be, unlike some artists today. I guess you can get that luxury when it’s your 34th studio album.
As to what he’s singing about, he gets political and philosophical on In Money We Trust, talks of tales on the road in Goin’ Down To Monte Carlo (after a stay in Nice – a treat for me as I’ve been there too). Sit back and relax, Van Morrison is back and better than ever.
