Monique Knight - When Depression becomes a Monster

Friday, October 19, 2012 3:33 PM

Depression becomes something to worry about at early onset and needs to be addressed as soon as possible.  Sometimes depression becomes a monster and sometimes that monster can be dangerous. This article is about when depression becomes a monster.

The monster called depression comes in many forms. It will pretend to be your friend, it will fill your head with thoughts you won’t have had before. The Monster wants to win and ultimately it wants to win by making you lose, your joy, your friends, your work, your appetite, your sleep and ultimately your life.

Take this monster very seriously. Not taking it seriously can be disastrous.  The Monster can sneak up on you and pretend to help you. It has all sorts of tricks to get you to give in to it. You may even think you are doing the right thing or doing others a favour. It’s not true. The Monster is tricking you.

Depression the Monster works in the following ways and if any of these things is happening to you get help now. Get help because it means the Monster is getting stronger and soon it might be stronger than you.

Joy: The monster sucks the joy out of life.  It wants all the joy for itself and so it inhales the joy so you can’t have it.

Friends: The Monster does not want you to see your friends because it does not want you to feel loved or cared for. It wants you to feel alone and lonely so that other people cannot interfere with the monsters final goal. To Win!

Food: The monster tastes your food first and takes the taste away.  If you can’t taste the food you won’t want to eat it. If you don’t eat it you will get weaker and the Monster will get stronger.

Sleep: Sometimes the monster will make you sleep more because he will wear you out.  What’s even worse is when the Monster wears you out and then keeps you awake.  Not sleeping makes it hard to think clearly.  If you can’t think clearly the monster will win.

Concentration: The Monster is so in your face it distracts you from everything else that might interest you.  It says look at me, it wants your undivided attention, it wants to be the only thing you think about because if it can have your attention it can have more control over you and the monster gets stronger.  Starting to see the picture?

What a counsellor does is help you get stronger.  To challenge what the Monster is telling you about yourself and the people around you, to show you the monster’s tricks so that you can get stronger and you can win.  Working with depression is a battle and you might feel so tired you don’t want to fight. You must. Depression the Monster has no right to you.  The Depression Monster is a thief.

So if you are at a point when any of the above is affecting you get help now.  You don’t have to have the Monster.  The Tui Centre knows all about the depression Monster and we can help you fight it.  Call 0800 Tui 100 today.
