Injured actor James Rolleston has shifted hospitals and is now in an intensive care unit.

Rolleston, who rose to fame starring in the celebrated New Zealand film Boy, was seriously injured when his car struck a bridge on State Highway 35 near Opotiki.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokeswoman Diana Marriot said Rolleston was transferred to Waikato Hospital from Tauranga Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Today his family thanked everyone for their concern following Tuesday night's road accident.

"The family would like to thank all the well wishers who have sent so many messages of love and support, they are finding this a huge comfort at this time," said Marriot.

No further details will be released and the family will make no future comment and ask that their privacy be respected.

The car Rolleston was in hit the Otara bridge about 10.30pm on Tuesday.

Firefighters cut him free and because of the injuries he suffered, a specialist paramedic was flown in to stabilise him before he was flown to Tauranga Hospital.

A second person in the car had minor injuries.
