The 69-year-old actress - who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film 'The Queen' - received the accolade for reprising her role as the monarch in 'The Audience', marking her first ever Tony Award win.

Taking to the stage at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City, she said: "Your Majesty, you did it again."

The 'Hundred Foot Journey' star beat off stiff competition from 'The Great Gatsby' actress Carey Mulligan, who was nominated for playing an inner-city schoolteacher in 'Skylight', and 'Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss who starred in the feminist play 'The Heidi Chronicles'.

Elsewhere on the night, 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' - which was adapted into a play by Simon Stephens from the Mark Haddon novel of the same name - was among the big winners, receiving the Best Play, Best Director of a Play, Best Leading Actor in a Play, Best Lighting Display of a Play and Best Scenic Design of a Play awards.
