If you're a Michael, you're bound to have had to face the daily confusion which occurs for people with common names.

Well, your name is... Michael is the most popular name of the past 60 years in New Zealand.

Since 1954 more than 40,000 Kiwi babies have been given the moniker of Michael, according to data provided by the Department of Internal Affairs.

Stuff has analysed the data and tracked trends from the top 100 names for each year.

The top 10 most popular names in NZ since 1954 (both genders) are:
Michael 1 40,099
David 2 36,792

Interestingly, even though this data includes females, all top 10 are male, which could mean that males are more likely to given common names, whilst females can be given more unusual names.

The three top-ranking girls' names are:

Sarah - number 12 - 19,901

Karen - number 22 - 13,524
