Tennis has served up a new colour debate on social media, with Twitter users passionately debating whether the balls used in the sport are green or yellow.

Sporting superstar Roger Federer has even been hauled into the discussion, offering a resounding 'yellow' - without hesitation - when asked by a fan.

An online Twitter poll that aimed to garner opinion on the hot potato found that, of 30,000 people voting, 52 per cent agreed tennis balls are green, while 42 per cent suggested they were yellow. A further six per cent ticked 'other.'

Responding to the poll, many were outraged that tennis balls could be any other colour than yellow.

@MollyyCS screamed: 'Who in the right mind thinks tennis balls are green!??? THEY YELLOW!!!'

After seeing the debate raging, @delaneyanndold's father approached Roger Federer directly after spotting him in the street.

When asked, the 36-year-old Swiss, replied, 'They're yellow, right?'

@audra_spiven wasn't convinced though: 'Tennis balls are green. Why is this a question. Roger Federer is wrong.'

And the emoji adds further weight to the debate, clearly green in colour.

So, who's right? Well, both parties could actually be.

The official verdict from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) says 'the ball shall have a uniform outer surface consisting of a fabric cover and shall be white or yellow in colour.'

However, as many have pointed out, the shade commonly used appears to be 'chartreuse', a colour between yellow and green.
