Clem Curtis, who was the original lead singer of The Foundations, has died aged 76.

Curtis’s family confirmed he passed away on Monday morning (UK time).

His band The Foundations were best known for their 1967 track Baby, Now That I’ve Found You, which is believed to be the first chart-topper by a British multi-racial band.

Curtis left The Foundations in 1968 shortly before they had a hit with Build Me Up Buttercup, but returned to sing in various line-ups.

Curtis launched a solo career in the 1970s, with tracks including Mountain Over The Hill, I’ve Never Found A Girl (To Love Me Like You Do) and Need Your Love.

Clem also lent his hand to acting, appearing on stage in the West End, with the part of Lion in The Wiz among his roles. His TV work included drama The Bill.
