She revealed on Monday that she had a cancerous growth removed from her lower lip.

But Jane Fonda, 80, used humour to brush off the unsightly bandage covering her scar that evening, when she made her first TV appearance since the news.

The actress told Jimmy Fallon that she hoped her scar would have healed in time, because she wanted to 'look good' for the NBC show, while her Grace & Frankie co-star Lily Tomlin joked about being 'obsessed' with looking at the bandage.

Referencing the flesh-coloured plaster as soon as she sat down, Jane told the host: 'I had a little cancer removed.

'I thought it was gonna heal before I came on the show, I wanted to look good... It's fine.'

Jane first revealed the news to an AOL BUILD Series audience earlier that day after what is believed to have been an operation to remove a basal-cell carcinoma (the most common form of skin cancer).

'I just want to explain it,' she said. 'I don't normally go around like this. The world is falling apart. What's a lip?'
