If you love your chocolate, global warming could be about to torment your sweet tooth!
The main growing regions for cocoa, especially Ghana and Ivory Coast which provide half the world’s supply, could be shrinking.
The Centre for Tropical Agriculture Production has predicted output could fall off hugely by 2050, making cocoa more scarce and expensive.
Although new growing regions could develop, moving the whole cocoa industry would be uncertain and certainly not cheap.
To add to the sour prediction, the report adds that similar changes are already happening in the best sugar cane growing areas and are contributing to a 30% decrease in production in Indonesia.
Even more bad news for the sweet toothed of the future - one report suggests that the entire U.S. maple syrup industry in New England could be gone by 2100.
I forsee stockpiles of sweet treats in households around the world and as a positive spin-off if chocolate gets too expensive, perhaps less wobble around the waistline!
