Don't throw out your apple peel - it could whittle down your waist.
The chemical behind apple skin, is credited with helping the body burn extra calories.
Ursolic acid is the magic stuff and researchers have found that it seems to keep blood sugar levels in check and stop the liver from becoming clogged up with fat.
The University of Iowa research has found the acid, which is also found in cranberries and prunes and in basil, oregano and thyme, boosts the growth of muscle and brown fat, a calorie-hungry version of fat common in babies.
That brown fat may help protect us against obesity.
Ursolic acid's muscle-building properties could also be of benefit, stopping muscles from wasting as we age and cutting the risk of hard-to-heal fractures.
Now... all this research has only been carried out on mice, but it looks promising for humans and that's what the researchers are tackling next .
They need to work out how many apples we'd need to eat to make muscles bulge and waistlines shrink.
If the number is very high, we have to forgo eating a stack of apples every day and take a supplement instead..
