Pyjamas have appeared on the catwalks this year, but what about on the street? Should they be banned from being worn in public perhaps? The trend is so popular, some locals say it shows a lack of self-respect and isn't attractive for visitors and better-dressed locals alike. Heart of Gisborne manager Ken Huberts says "It's just a little bit of self-respect and some of the argument is that some people have just lost that thought and consider the supermarket and main stretch like their backyard." Mr Huberts adds, there aren't hordes of people wearing their pjs in public, but they do stand out. So what about a PJ-prohibiting law? Gisborne deputy mayor Nona Aston doesn't reckon it'll happen. Mind you, there's not much difference between some pyjamas and a tracksuit, so where would you draw the line in the supermarket queue? Pyjama Police may be needed!
I remember my first 'PJ's-in-a-supermarket' encounter, one afternoon in Te Kuiti. No one else raised an eyebrow.
The fashion versions worn by celebrities aren't the flannelette variety, are created in silky fabrics and usually worn by bodies that could look good in a sack, but in Gisborne, there's an uproar over PJs in the supermarket!
