This song topped the charts around the world in 1981 (including here in New Zealand) - the lyrics almost imitate real life too! The Human League lead singer Phil Oakey met schoolgirls Susan Sulley and Joanne Catherall in a Sheffield nighclub and asked them to join his band, initially just as dancers and back-up vocalists. But they soon ended up providing full vocals, changing the sound of the band and widening its appeal.
In a further twist, Joanne and Phil began a long-term relationship just as the band hit the big time in 1981, and they remained together until 1990. The split was amicable though, and all three are now equal business partners in the band.
