George Clooney says he's more than ready to be a father.

The star, who is set to welcome twin babies with his wife, Amal, told E! News that although he can't "believe" it, he's "happier" than ever about having children.

"I didn't know that we'd have kids. I was very happy that we were going to get married and then [having children] seemed like the next step."

George also joked that he already has experience with kids from his days on the TV show, ER.

"I played a paediatrician on ER," he told E! News.

"So I know how to work on extra children ... If there are any accidents, I'm there. I'm the guy."

However, when it comes to thinking up names, the couple aren't quite as ready.

George explained: "I've had friends pick out names around their parents and then it becomes ... whatever name you pick they're like, 'Oh, I don't like that. That guy's a prime minister … Can't name her Susan. You remember your Aunt Susan?'"

Although, there have already been some baby names taken off the list.

The actor also co-owns the Casamigos tequila brand with friend Rande Gerber and he told ET that Amal has vetoed two of his proposed names for their twins.

"My wife says I can't name them Casa and Amigos. That's the one thing I'm not allowed to do," he told the TV entertainment show.

George, 55, who always swore he would never marry and have children, added that he thinks becoming an instant father to two children will "be fun."

As for how his Lebanese-British wife is doing, Clooney told Extra the 39-year-old is "doing really great."

"She is amazing," he said. "I don’t have anything to do. There is nothing I can do to help, but make tea and stuff."

He also joked, in a nod to his age, that diapers will be an important part of life "for me not for the kids."
