These Allyson Gofton Spicy Beef Satays are perfect to get the kids helping out in the kitchen. Simply adjust the spices with other flavours in the pantry if you're not sure how they'll go with the spice. A great tip with these skewers is to soak the bamboo skewers in water before you start preparation. By soaking the skewers, they're less likely to blacken and burn during the cooking process.

Ingredients
    500 grams rump steak
1 onion, peeled and roughly chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed and peeled
    2 tblsp Indonesian soy sauce
2 tsp each ground coriander and cumin
1 tsp each turmeric, five spice powder and salt
1 lemon (grated rind and juice)

Method
Trim any excess fat from the rump steak. Cut the steak into long thin strips, about 0.5cm wide. Thread the strip evenly onto 12 skewers.

In a food processor put the onion, garlic, soy sauce, spices, lemon rind and juice and process until smooth.

Pour the marinade over the beef and turn to coat. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for one hour or overnight.

Cook the skewers over a moderate heat for about 8-10 minutes turning once. Serve with the Quick Peanut Satay.

Quick Peanut Satay
In a bowl blend together 1/2 cup each smooth peanut butter and coconut cream with, 2 tblsp each Indonesian Soy Sauce, lemon juice and brown sugar.
