Police have found a five-year-old girl who was snatched outside a Palmerston North school.

It is understood Shekinah Relies-Skipper was dumped on a small suburban road on the outskirts of Palmerston North.

They are looking for a four-door white Mitsubishi gallant, suggesting the person who took her has changed cars.

An man from the street said it was mainly elderly residents down the street and it was an elderly couple that lived at the property where the girl was.

Three mufti police cars are on the scene, one is in the driveway of the house.

Two police officers are standing across the road on a footpath.

A reporter standing 150m from the house said it was a brown brick townhouse. An elderly woman on the driveway can be seen speaking to police.

A little girl could be seen in the back of a police car, being taken away from the scene.

A regular police scanner listener heard the drama unfold this morning.

Locals reported a police helicopter circling above the settlement for the past half hour.

Numerous police cars were also seen in streets.

Police believe Shekinah was abducted as she walked to school about 8.30am.

They say she was seen being pulled by a man into a white older model Chevy sedan, coloured white and maroon on Burns Avenue.

The car was last seen travelling towards Featherston Street on Shamrock Street.

The vehicle is described as old looking but possibly restored.

Shekinah is wearing a Te Kura o Takaro School uniform.

A woman who answered the phone at the Brighton Cres school said a spokeperson - either the principal or the board of trustees chairperson - would speak to media later. She would not say when.
