The iconic cowboy hat and eye patch wearing member of the 70s US rock band Dr Hook has passed away.

Sawyer passed away due to a "brief illness" in Daytona, Florida according to US media.

Dr Hook was known for their hits Cover of the Rolling Stone (on which Ray sang lead vocals), Sylvia's Mother, and When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman.

Ray first joined the band in 1969, two years after he lost his right eye in a car crash, which resulted in the iconic eye patch.

Though he wasn't the lead singer of the band, he was easily the most recognised member due to the hat/patch combination.

Rest easy Ray.
