October may have only just started, but Ed Sheeran and his pal Sir Elton John are giving fans a reason to look forward to the festive season already ...

Because this December the duo are set to release a Christmas song together!

Speaking on Dutch radio station NPO Radio 2, the 30-year-old admitted the pair have recorded a holiday hit and "it's f****** great."

"Elton rang me on Christmas Day to say Merry Christmas. Elton rings me almost every single day," Sheeran told hosts Jan-Willem Roodbeen and Jeroen Kijk in de Vegte.

"He said, ''Step Into Christmas' is Number 6 in the charts! I want to do another Christmas song – will you do it with me?"

The British singer-songwriter said he initially "didn't feel like [the song] suited" him, but after the death of a close friend, he decided to take John up on the opportunity.

"It really just hit home how stuff can just change overnight," he said.

"I was like, 'Why the f*** am I not doing a Christmas song with Elton John? I might not be here tomorrow, this will be a f****** great way to celebrate Christmas.'"

The two musicians have been friends for years - with Sheeran signed to Elton's management company, Rocket.

We can't wait to hear it!
