Ed Sheeran has made the day of a young fan who listened to his music while battling a rare form of cancer.

At the age of nine, Harry Hunter - who is now 15 - suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

At one point during his battle, Hunter had to learn to walk again and spent 15 months in a wheelchair.

During the many months he spent in Queensland Children's Hospital, he would listen to Sheeran's melodies as a therapeutic release.

Upon hearing about how his music helped the youngster, the 31-year-old singer sent a heartwarming video message to his fan.

"Hey Harry, Ed Sheeran here," the global music sensation can be heard saying in the short clip.

"I heard you were a fan of my music so I wanted to make a video for you."

"Thank you for being a great fan and lots of love," Sheeran concluded.

Speaking to Nine News after receiving the video message, Hunter said he found it "quite surreal" hearing from his idol.
