Twenty years ago, Ellen DeGeneres came out as gay in Hollywood, but she's only just opened up about how she was bullied for it now.

She came out on the cover of Time Magazine back in 1997.

Because of this, her TV show was canceled, and she noticed that her opportunities in Hollywood were slowly disappearing.

"The bullying I endured after I came out made up for the lack of it during my childhood,” she told Good Housekeeping.

"It was scary and lonely. All I'd known for 30 years was work, and all of a sudden I had nothing. Plus, I was mad. It didn't feel fair — I was the same person everyone had always known."

It was only once Portia de Rossi, her now wife, came along and became her saving grace.

@PortiadeRossi and I got married 9 years ago today. Being her wife is the greatest thing I am.

"Eventually I started meditating, working out and writing again, and I slowly started to climb out of it.”

“I can't believe I came back from that point. I can't believe where my life is now."

The couple also celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary just this week, what a great happy ending!
