Elton John has thanked his fans for their support after he was forced to cancel his Auckland shows having been diagnosed with walking pneumonia just hours before going on stage.

Continuing his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour in Melbourne, after a week of rest, the legendary singer took to Instagram to address what he described as a "tough week".

Alongside a photo taken from the Australian concert, the Oscar-winning singer wrote: "Melbourne, your love and energy was the best remedy after a tough week. You lifted me up so much, thank you!! Can't wait for more tonight in Coffs Harbour."

And fans flooded his post thanking him for the update.

"Nothing makes me happier than to see you healthy and performing again. Be well, Sir Elton. We love you," wrote one fan.

Another said: "It's great to see you feeling better."

While a third added: "You looked like you were so happy to be back Elton. Glad to be a part of it. Thank you."

The update comes following the 72-year-old had to leave stage midway through his performance at Auckland's Mt Smart last Sunday.

The superstar, who earlier needed medical assistance while on stage, broke down in tears and needed to be assisted from the stage after attempting to launch into 'Daniel'.

"I'm incredibly disappointed to have to reschedule my remaining Auckland dates and I want to send my sincerest apologies to my amazing fans for any inconvenience caused", said John.

"I always want to be able to give one hundred percent and I'm afraid that, right now, I'm not able to do that. I am grateful for the love and loyalty I have been shown by all of you and I can't wait to return in January next year to perform my final New Zealand shows."

Due to Elton John's international Farewell Yellow Brick Road dates filling the remainder of the calendar year, the performer will return at the earliest possible opportunity; January 2021.

Tickets for Elton's Wednesday 19 February (previously Tuesday 18 February) concert will be valid for Friday 15 January 2021.

Tickets for the Thursday 20 February show will be valid for Saturday 16 January 2021.

Those unable to attend the rescheduled shows next year can contact Ticketmaster to request a refund.
