Broadcaster Frank Torley is being remembered for his commitment to Country Calendar.

The 75-year-old passed away in Wellington Hospital yesterday after a short battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.

He had worked on the show in various roles, including presenter, reporter, director and narrator.

He started producing Country Calendar in the early 1980s.

His son Mark Torley said his father could talk to people from all walks of life.

"He made you feel like you were the most important important person in the room, or on the farm and he was able to convey people's stories so well."

Mark Torley said his dad refused to be treated as an invalid.

"One of the things we're most proud of is that he turned up to speak at Country Calendar's 50th birthday celebrations and just a few days earlier he'd come out of intensive care."

Frank Torley had retired from Country Calendar in February.

He's survived by his wife Jenny, son Mark, daughter Bridget and a three-year-old grandson.

He was awarded the ONZM for services to broadcasting in 2002.

Mr Torley said his dad was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and was a real inspiration.

Country Calendar celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this month and is the longest running New Zealand-made TV show.
