'The Revenant' leads the way with 12 Academy Award nominations. 

The semi-biographical western film set in 1823 and inspired by the experiences of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass will compete in a number of categories at the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on February 28, 2016. 

Star Leonardo DiCaprio will vie for Best Actor, Alejandro G Inarritu is up for Best Director, Tom Hardy has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor and the movie will compete for Best Picture. 

Other nominations include Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Make-up and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography. 

'Mad Max: Fury Road' is second with an impressive 10 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for George Miller, although its cast missed out on acting nods. 

Meanwhile,  'The Martian' has seven nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for its star Matt Damon. 

Other nominees include Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlotte Rampling and Saoirse Ronan, who will compete for Best Actress. 

Jennifer Leigh, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Alicia Vikander and Kate Winslet will compete for Best Supporting Actress while Hardy will battle Christian Bale, Mark Ruffalo, Sylvester Stallone and Mark Rylance for Best Supporting Actor. 

Matt and Leonardo DiCaprio will compete with Bryan Cranston, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor. 

Miller and Innaritu's fellow Best Director nominees include Adam McKay , Lenny Abhramson and Tom McCarthy while the Best Picture nominees are 'The Big Short', 'Bridge of Spies', 'Brooklyn', Mad Max: Fury Road', 'The Martian', 'The Revenant', 'Room' and 'Spotlight.'

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs was joined by actor John Krasinski and directors Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee to announce the nominees in all 24 categories while Chris Rock will host the 88th annual Academy Awards on Feburay 28.
