Diehard Star Wars fans, you have been warned.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has been coy on details, but told fans of the franchise to steer clear of the latest trailer if they want to "come in completely clean" when they see it at the cinema.

"I a legitimately torn. If you want to come in clean, absolutely avoid it," he tweeted a fan.

The latest trailer was released during halftime on ESPN's Monday Night Football in the US.

It is the first new footage from Episode VIII since the first trailer was released during Star Wars Celebrations in April.

The trailer comes after a new movie poster for Episode VIII was released today, and two short video teasers were released yesterday.

The poster shows Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in the background, looming over key characters in the film including Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Rey (Daisy Ridley), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Finn, (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and their popular new droid, BB-8. BB-9E, a new evil droid, also appears on it.

Iconic drioids R2D2 and C-3PO also feature on it.

The first trailer, posted on the official Star Wars social media accounts, show Rey training on Ahch-To, with a blue lightsaber instead of her staff.

In the closing scenes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, she travelled to the island to find Skywalker.

Her plan was to deliver him his original lightsaber and bring him back home.

In the new scenes from Episode VIII, she can be seen wielding her power with the famous Jedi weapon on a cliff, as Skywalker, watches on in the distance.

Another teaser that dropped on Good Morning America also shows the moment Rey hands Skywalker the lightsaber.

He reaches out for it with his robotic hand which he got after Darth Vader cut his hand off in their epic first duel in Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back

The teaser trailers also appear to show how Rey's Jedi powers have also strengthened since Episode VII, with a scene showing her able to lift rubble from the ground.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on December 14.

The next instalment, Episode IX, has been pushed back to December 20, 2019.
