The Wizard of Oz is a movie beloved by many …

But it turns out there is a rather bizarre fact about the 1939 film that may leave you feeling quite disturbed.

It turns out that the Cowardly Lion’s costume was made from an actual lion.

Um, what?!

The costume, which was worn by actor Bert Lahr, was constructed of lion skin and fur and weighed more than 27kgs.

As the film was made before synthetic fur existed, the film's production team had no other option for creating a realistic lion costume.

Lahr wore the same costume – which has previously sold at auction for more than $3 million - throughout filming and as it didn’t allow for much ventilation, he was constantly sweating.

As a result, after each under Technicolor lights, the costume had to be placed in an industrial drying bin overnight so that the perspiration could be dried before the next production day.

Hopefully, this news didn’t ruin the movie for you!
