Kiwi pop star Lorde has been blasted for a social media post that referenced the late, legendary singer Whitney Houston.

Lorde has issued an apology and deleted the Instagram post, which included a photo of a bath tub and the caption: "And iiii will always love you."

Whitney Houston was found dead in a bathtub in the Beverly Hilton hotel on February 11, 2012, with the coroner's report listing heart disease and cocaine as contributing factors to her death by accidental drowing.

Her biggest hit and most memorable ballad was a cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You in 1992.

After deleting the post, Lorde took to Instagram stories to offer an apology.

"Extremely extremely poorly chosen quote," she wrote. "I'm so sorry for offending anyone - I hadn't even put this together I was just excited to take a bath."

She also wrote: "I'm an idiot. Love Whitney forever and ever. Sorry again."

She posted a second message that read: "It's not my f** day today," with a series of upset emojis.

We still love you Ella! Keep up the great work
