Princess Charlotte was comforted by her mother as she farewelled her beloved "Gan Gan" at Queen Elizabeth's funeral overnight.

The seven-year-old royal broke down in tears in a touching moment as Her Majesty's coffin was lowered into the hearse at Wellington Arch.

The Princess of Wales was by her side to provide support as the young princess bid her final farewell.

Both Charlotte and her older brother Prince George, nine, had shown composure beyond their years during the emotional service.

Tugging at royal fans heartstrings, the young princess was also seen instructing her brother that he needed "to bow" as the Queen's coffin went past.

Their little brother Prince Louis, four, was deemed too young to attend.

The moment comes after Princess Kate made a heartbreaking admission to Australia's Governor-General ahead of the funeral, revealing how her children were handling the passing of their great-grandmother.

Governor-General David Hurley said in an interview: "The younger one [Louis] is now asking questions like, 'Do you think we can still play these games when we go to Balmoral and things like that, cause she's [the Queen] not going to be there?'"

Hurley also recalled Kate telling him that George was just now "realising how important his great-grandmother was" amid global grief over her death.
