It has been quite the start to 2020 for Sir Rod Stewart.

First, the legendary singer was charged with battery by police after he allegedly punched a security guard at a hotel in Florida on New Year's Eve.

And now he has undergone surgery on his knee on his 75th birthday.

Taking to Instagram, his wife Penny Lancaster shared a photo of the rocker looking well and in high spirits in his room in hospital.

The 'Maggie May' hitmaker - who celebrated his 75th birthday on Friday 10 January - was dressed in a white dressing gown and was wearing a compression sock on his left foot as he stood by a table decorated with a birthday cake, birthday balloons and a bouquet of flowers.

Penny captioned the snap: "Roddy is doing remarkably well after his knee replacement surgery on Tuesday (so well that the naughty boy keeps trying to walk without his crutches)."

"Luckily he is being discharged today to celebrate his 75th tonight and home this weekend to see the boys play football!"

In November last year, Rod told BBC Radio 2 that he would be having an operation after his knee had "packed up" following years of playing football.

The music icon said: "It is from football over the years but I will be OK. I will be fine."

We're glad to hear the surgery went well!
