Former All Blacks captain and Auckland Grammar School headmaster Sir John Graham has passed away.

Sir John played 22 tests for the All Blacks, including three as captain, between 1958 and 1964, and was President of the New Zealand Rugby Union from 2005 to 2007.

He was also the New Zealand cricket team manager from 1997 to 1999.

Sir John was headmaster of Auckland Grammar School for 20 years, from 1973 to 1993 and Chancellor of the University of Auckland from 1999 to 2004.

He passed away peacefully late Wednesday evening.

"Auckland Grammar School and Auckland Grammar School Old Boys' Association extends its condolences to Lady Graham and the extended Graham family," Auckland Grammar School said in a statement.

"Sir John's passion for quality education saw decades of his life committed to the education sector. His role as the 9th Headmaster of Auckland Grammar School from January 1973 to May 1993, was defining."
