Sri Lanka has narrowly avoided a shock upset at the Cricket World Cup.

Chasing 233 to beat Afghanistan in Dunedin, the Sri Lankans got into major strife at three for 18, with both openers Lahiru Thirimanne and Tillakaratne Dilshan dismissed for first ball ducks.

However, a century from Mahela Jayawardene helped saved the Sri Lankan innings, as the side reached 236 runs to lock in the victory with 10 balls to spare.
