You can't get much more Kiwi than a good old sausage and bread with tomato sauce.

Even our very own Jason Reeves can't eat a meal without the classic red condiment.

But you may want to reconsider how much t sauce that you are piling on this your food this coming BBQ season.

Nutritionist Kristen Beck spoke to news.com.au how healthy the vegetable sauce really is:

"Tomato sauce contains a lot of sugar and salt and next to no nutritional value."

"A single serve of tomato sauce is around 15ml (roughly three teaspoons of tomato sauce) and generally equates to 1 teaspoon of sugar (glucose and fructose)."

"In addition to the natural sugars coming from tomatoes, manufacturers also add around 20% cane sugar to tomato sauce, but the exact amount added is impossible to decipher because Australian labelling laws don't require the exact amount of sugar added to be listed on the label," Ms Beck said.

So even though tomato sauce might seem healthy, tomatoes are 95% water weight and once pureed, have a high concentration of sugar.
