A-listers are used to wafting down the red carpet in designer gowns costing more than most of us earn in a year.

But while most of their ensembles will be forgotten amid the never-ending parade of award ceremonies, premieres and parties, some gowns manage to achieve iconic status and a very hefty price tag to match.

Now Getty images has revealed the most expensive celebrity dresses in the world, based on the cost of the actual garment or the value its accrued over time.

The list includes two royals, Princess Diana and The Duchess of Cambridge with the latter's Alexander McQueen wedding dress having cost a huge £250,000.

Nicole Kidman also makes the list, not so much because of the value of the John Galliano for Christian Dior dress she wore to the 1997 Oscars, but because she was reportedly paid $2 million to wear it.

And the white dress Marilyn Monroe wore in the famous subway scene in The Seven Year Itch has the distinction of being the most valuable after selling for $5.6 million at auction in 2011.

Another piece of movie history, Audrey Hepburn's famous black Givenchy dress from Breakfast At Tiffany's also makes the grade.

Seen as one of the most iconic dresses of all time, it sold for just under a million dollars at auction.
