The Queen Mother's "steady" drinking schedule has been revealed

The Queen Mother's daily drinking schedule has been revealed in a new book that has come from personal accounts of royal staff who have worked behind the palace gates over the years.

In Adrian Tinniswood's 'Behind the Throne', he goes into detail about the Queen Mother's schedule that was described as 'steady' rather than 'excessive'.

She kicked off her day with a glass of Dubonnet and gin before lunch, wine with the meal, a martini before dinner then a glass of champagne with dinner.

Sometimes she would mix things up with a glass of port after lunch and two martinis before dinner followed by the champagne with dinner. 

Describing the period in the Nineties during which Major Burgess was on the Queen Mother's staff, Tinniswood writes: 'The Clarence House routine was relatively sedate by this time.

'When there were no visitors, lunch would be taken in a corner of the drawing room or, in fine summer weather, out in the garden. 

'The Queen Mother usually ate with one of her ladies in waiting and two men from the 'home team'. 

'Contrary to popular myth, her alcohol consumption was steady rather than excessive,'
