A 10-year-old girl has raised $10,000 in just one day from a lemonade stand she set up to raise funds to rebuild her family's home, which was destroyed by fire in 2013.
Alyssa De La Sala, a fourth-grader from Florida decided to set up shop on May 16 in order to help her parents with the astronomical costs that insurance failed to cover.
And after a local radio station publicised the family’s plight, and Alyssa’s impressive efforts to provide support to her parents, the stand succeeded beyond the family’s wildest dreams. Lines were so long that crossing guards had to help with crowd control, and customers donated up to $1,000 for a single cup of lemonade.
On the big day Alyssa made strawberry and regular lemonade, and manned the stand with her 13-year-old brother Damon.
Along with the nearly $10,000 Alyssa’s stand raised, the GoFundMe page has raised nearly $5,000 so far. The De La Sala family told ABC News that they need about $70,000 more to finish their home.
'I am speechless, overwhelmed,' Alyssa told the news channel. 'It is amazing.'
Her father added that he was particularly touched by a dad who had just lost his 13-year-old son to cancer and told him, 'Life is short. Life is precious,' before making a $100 donation.
