The Original Batmobile Is For Sale For $4.5million

Batman fans around the world finally have the chance to get their hands on the original Batmobile as it goes up for auction in Arizona.

It is expected to sell for an estimated US$4.5million when it is privately sold at Barrett-Jackson Collection Showroom.

Driven by actor Adam West, the iconic Batmobile was used in the 1966 TV series and remains one of the most popular cars in the world.

With its unusual bubble window and armament of rockets and gadgets, including an automatic tyre re-inflating system, the batmobile embodied the image of the superhero.

The iconic 1966 car was built in just three weeks by top car customiser George Barris and was based on an unsold concept car called the Lincoln Futura.

Handmade in Italy for $250,000, the Lincoln Futura was designed by Ford Motor company but was never put into production.

Barris's design of the batmobile focused on attaching additional bat inspired wings and a new front nose to the vehicle.
