The Lion King prequel 'Mufasa' is coming to cinemas at the end of the year and Disney has just released the first trailer.

The film tells the legend of Mufasa, as told by Rafiki in flashbacks, to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa's classic antics.

We see Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka - the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny, but their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.

Blue Ivy is set to play the voice of Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala (voiced by Beyoncé). Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen, who previously played Timon and Pumba, will also appear in the prequel.

Mufasa director Barry Jenkins told Good Morning America "I was so glad that both Beyoncé and Blue Ivy were down to do [Mufasa], and watching them work together was just really special. Beyoncé is this larger-than-life figure, but when she's working with her daughter, when she's in the room with her daughter, she's a mom first. So much of that energy bled into the film."

Mufasa: The Lion King is set to hit New Zealand cinemas on December 19, 2024.
