On March 3, 1997, the Auckland skyline received a dramatic spike when the Sky Tower was officially opened in the centre of the CBD.

The iconic Auckland feature was an engineering feat constructed out of masses of concrete, 2000 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 260 panes of glass.

It is New Zealand's tallest man-made structure - now one of the most recognised in the country - and is frequently lit up to mark milestones, national holidays and other special events.
