A packed passenger jet came alarmingly close to motorists as it came into land so low it grazed an airport perimeter fence.

The Airbus 340 travelling from Madrid to San Jose, Costa Rica, came in at such a low altitude witnesses reported seeing the screws on the plane's underbelly and nearby houses shook from the force.

The Daily Mail reports the flight was forced to change its landing pattern due to winds.

Witnesses on the ground recorded the incident and posted the footage online.

Airport authorities insist it was a controlled landing and there was nothing unusual about it.

Juan Santamaria International Airport is known as a challenging place to land. In September 2007, a Jet Lease Corp flight ran off the runway into the grass.
