Since becoming queen at 25, in 1952, the Queen has had many key milestones during her rule in Britain. Now 89 years old, she has remained a dedicated monarch, even when under public pressure to demonstrate her grief at the passing of Princess Diana in 1997.

On the eve of Diana's funeral she made an unprecedented televised tribute to Diana's memory. She also broke protocol and flew the union flag at half-staff above Buckingham Palace — something that had never been done.
