Hollywood star Nicole Kidman has spoken out about the toughest elements of raising her two daughters, Faith Margaret and Sunday Rose.

She admits to grappling with "helicopter parenting" tendencies despite already having two other children with her first husband, Tom Cruise.

In an interview with Foxtel magazine, Kidman said: "When my daughters are playing on the monkey bars I try not to hover and say 'be careful'. I want them to find their own way, but I still have that balance of knowing I am there when they need me."

Her daughters with Keith Urban arrived more than 15 years after she raised Connor and Isabella with Cruise. And she says her two youngest are deeply aware of their mother's moods.

"Sometimes I'm too much and that's when they go, 'Please don't burst into tears when I tell you this, mum'. So I try not to because I want them to tell me things."

Kidman lives in Nashville with Urban but will star in the Australian series Big Little Lies which will be available here in New Zealand on SoHo and NEON from February 26.
