For fans, watching celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's newest TV show, Gordon Ramsey: Uncharted, has become a real "kitchen nightmare."

The 52-year-old threw viewers of the National Geographic show - which takes Ramsay to different countries across the globe to showcase other cultures and the foods they eat - when he travelled to Peru to eat guinea pig, calling the animal "delicious."

While guinea pigs, known as cuy (pronounced "kwee") by locals, have been a staple in South American country's diet for around 5,000 years, many Westerners keep the small, furry critters as domesticated pets, and therefore, can’t imagine eating them.

But that didn’t stop the notoriously angry chef from, well, pigging out on the unconventional meal choice.

Throughout the first episode of the six-part series, viewers were shown how the living guinea pigs are kept, skinned guinea pigs as part of the preparation process and cuy that had been roasted.

The scenes, for some animal lovers, was a bit too much to take.

As he ate the guinea pig, the multi-Michelin star chef could be heard saying: "You do not know what you’re missing."

"I am telling you now, delicious."

He also likened the local delicacy to "a suckling pig."

Fans flocked to Twitter to slam the show, with one viewer saying: "I realise people eat different things all over the world, they have to due to region, economics, etc. but being a guinea pig owner and lover I can’t watch Gordon Ramsey’s new show."

"Those poor, sweet pigs," added another.

"Eating guinea pigs?! Oh man!" said a third.

While someone else wrote: "Are you really killing and cooking something we have as pets @GordonRamsay? Guinea pigs? Please don’t air that if you do. It will freak out the children...and some adults."

"Disgusting Gordon Ramsay's guinea pig meal," said another.

Thanks, but no thanks Gordon!
