Triathlete Hayden Wilde has won New Zealand's first medal of the Tokyo Olympics after claiming bronze in the men's race today.

Norway's Kristian Blummenfelt won gold after sprinting away in the final stages of the 10km run to claim victory in 1h 45m 04s, with Great Britain's Alex Yee second and a delighted Wilde 20s behind.

An emotional Wilde dedicated the win to his dad.

"He died 12 years ago and never got to see me race," he said.

The 24-year-old Wilde is the third New Zealander to win a medal in the triathlon since Hamish Carter (gold in Athens) and Bevan Docherty (silver in Athens, bronze in Beijing).

Congratulations Hayden!
