Last night George Clooney was recognised at the prestigious Kennedy Center Honours - and Julia Roberts made sure to show her support for her longtime pal.

Ahead of the ceremony, the Ticket to Paradise actress walked the red carpet in a custom black Moschino scoop neckline taffeta gown that featured a vibrant collage of framed pictures of her co-star throughout his career.

Pairing the look with a black cropped blazer by Moschino and hoop earrings by Chopard, Roberts was all smiles.

"Growing up in a small town in Kentucky I could never have imagined that someday I'd be the one sitting in the balcony at the Kennedy Center Honors," George told the audience.

"To be mentioned in the same breath with the rest of these incredible artists is an honour. This is a genuinely exciting surprise for the whole Clooney family," the actor — whose parents Nick and Nina were also there to support him — added.

Clooney was among several lifetime achievement honourees at the event. Rock band U2 and singer Gladys Knight were also recognised.
