The Duchess of Sussex has won the hearts of even more New Zealand fans after beginning her speech with a few words of te reo.

She was welcomed to the Government House last night to a roaring applause before speaking about woman's suffrage.

"Tēnā koutou katoa," she said before thanking Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy for inviting Prince Harry and herself to the event.

"We are proud to be able to join you tonight, in celebrating the 125th anniversary of women's suffrage in your country."

Meghan spoke about the universally admired women of New Zealand who campaigned for their right to vote.

"In looking forward to this very special occasion, I reflected on the importance of this achievement, but also the larger impact of what this symbolises," she said.

"Because yes, women's suffrage is about feminism, but feminism is about fairness.

"Suffrage is not simply about the right to vote, but also about what that represents - the basic and fundamental human right of being able to participate in the choices for your future and that of your community."

The Duchess spoke to a few star-struck young girls and comforted them when they became emotional over the fact that they were meeting the Duchess of Sussex.

But while Meghan was comforting her young fans, Prince Harry was having a little trouble with one of our favourite New Zealand sporting star.

A young basketball fan asked Harry if he knew of Steven Adams, but unfortunately the Prince had absolutely no idea.
