Next year Paul McCartney will be celebrating a major milestone in his music journey - 60 years since he released his first single with The Beatles.

He has since had numerous hits, awards and even a knighthood to his name.

And now the British singer can add a personalised set of stamps to his long list of accolades.

In tribute to "one of the most iconic and enduring music artistes of all time," the Royal Mail has announced it will be issuing a set of 12 stamps depicting McCartney and his work.

The stamps - which will go on sale on May 28 - will feature the 78-year-old's album artwork and in-studio pictures from his recording sessions.

"Paul McCartney remains a vital figure at the centre of rock and pop - an artiste whose legacy is immense, but whose work continues to generate popular attention and critical acclaim," Mr David Gold, the director of public affairs and policy at Royal Mail, said in a statement.

"This dedicated stamp issue is a fitting tribute to one of the UK's much loved and revered musical icons."

Royal Mail said it had worked with McCartney on the stamps, which are priced at £16.20 for the full set.

The first commemorative stamp was issued for the British Empire Exhibition in 1924.

Since then, six to nine sets of commemorative stamps have been issued each year but few – apart from those celebrating members of the royal family or British sporting success – feature living people.

McCartney joins Sir Elton John and the late David Bowie as the only other individual music artists to feature in a dedicated stamp issue.

Congratulations Paul. What a well-deserved honour!
