Sir Elton John is celebrating another milestone in his sobriety journey.
Elton took to social media earlier today to celebrate the milestone, sharing a photo of an Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety coin and writing: "34 years clean and sober. My life has never been better."
In the early years of his stardom, Elton fell into a constant cycle of drug and alcohol abuse, confessing that for much of the 1970s and 1980s he experienced life through a “drug-fueled haze”. However, in 1990, after witnessing the devastating effects of the AIDS epidemic, he decided to get clean.
He told The Fix in 2017: “Within six months I became sober, and clean, and have been for the last 27 years”.
In 2020, while celebrating 30 years of sobriety, he told fans in a social media post: “If I hadn’t finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I’d be dead. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have inspired and supported me along the way”, he wrote.
Congratulations Elton. You’re an inspiration to everyone!
