White Island volcano eruption: Two more deaths in hospital overnight, official toll now eight

Two more victims of the White Island eruption have died overnight in hospital, taking the official toll to eight.

Police made the grim announcement this morning.

One victim was being treated at Middlemore Hospital and one at Waikato Hospital.

"Police remain focused on supporting families at this terrible time."

A further nine people are still missing or presumed dead, with eight thought to be on the island.

Seismic activity on the island has significantly increased since Monday when it erupted, killing six travellers, injuring more than 30 and leaving nine others - seven Australians and two New Zealanders - listed as missing presumed dead.
